Washington, move. Kyiv is becoming the drone-tech capital of the world. In 2022, Ukraine produced 0 military drones. In 2024 it produced 2 million—and aims for 4+ million in 2025. Their secret? Skipping defense giants and unleashing garage-born brilliance

Ukrainian soldiers don’t drown in bureaucratic reports. No time for that. They tell developers what they need that week. Hackathons, gov & NGO-run challenges, and direct comms mean drones are built for real battlefield problems, not PowerPoint slides.
The secret? As reported by Kateryna Bondar at @CSIS:
MONEY FLOWS DIRECTLY TO UNITS, whether from foreign aid through the government or especially through volunteer donations.
Cash → engineers → soldiers → drones
Instead of using Soviet-era giants, funds flow to 1,000+ defense micro-startups. The military buys from commercial producers at MVP/TRL 6–7—that means working prototypes already battle-tested. It’s startup speed applied to war.
Local mayors can redirect city budgets to buy drones for nearby units. TODAY. School teachers and nuns raise money for soldier friends to buy equipment unavailable via government procurement to make drones better.
I see this reality in Ukraine daily. And it's working.
In Ukraine, drone requirements come from soldiers, not bureaucrats or generals. Frontline units message developers directly about what they need THIS WEEK:
"This isn't working, and we need x to make it better."
This is critical: The enemy is also always adapting.
Ukraine set up @BRAVE1ua, a national defense-tech accelerator. It runs hackathons, open calls, and challenges where soldiers pitch problems and startups pitch fixes. It now tracks 85% of all defense tech in Ukraine—a live lab for war.
And Ukraine built DOT-Chain Defence—a digital marketplace where brigades can order drones and components to make drones better like shopping online.
Models, delivery times, reviews, re-orders—consumer-style transparency, but for warfighters.
Days, not years.
Remember: Ukraine’s drone revolution wasn’t led by old defense giants. It came from civilian engineers, professors, artists who swapped peacetime jobs for wartime invention. That’s the secret: free people, solving real problems, at startup speed, to keep their freedom.
Bureaucracy kills. Freedom builds. Ukraine’s garage inventors are outpacing Russia’s empire—and America’s Pentagon. Washington: adapt now, or you’ll be the next to fall behind.
